Reservoir 13 is a masterfully paced and grippingly controlled read that finds the shadows, the wildness, in the ordinary heart of a community." -- Colin Barrett, Rooney Prize-winning author of Young Skins

Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor — the hills are alive Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor — the hills are alive

Update 29/8/17: Having read all but four of the longlist, this one is still my favourite. The rest of my shortlist would be Autumn, Home Fire, Days Without End, Solar Bones and Elmet. Of the remaining four, Lincoln in the Bardo is the most likely to change my mind. Looking at his own work, McGregor was only too aware that in Reservoir 13 he could have written a “great state-of-the-nation thing about the farming crisis, the land use crisis, the housing crisis”. His research took him to villages where people commute into office jobs in Sheffield or Manchester, while rural workers can only afford to live in the cities: the two groups drive past each other morning and evening – a brilliant image of the messed-up housing market. But he stresses that he’s “allergic to trying to make points in fiction”. With his antipathy towards “big drama” he was also relieved to have sandwiched the book between the foot-and-mouth crisis of 2001 and the Brexit vote. He did, though, find himself last June mentally dividing the characters into leavers and remainers. “I started looking at them while I was editing, thinking OK, so which one of you … and realised that yes, I probably could tell.” Jon McGregor's uncanny stories linger long after you have finished them. He quietly inserts distinct, convincing voices into vivid and compelling landscapes. This original, beautiful, and haunting book totally captivated me." ―Dana Spiotta, author of Innocents and Others and National Book Award Finalist Eat the Document Here are the top Peak District walks in the Dark Peak area, covering the northern Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester parts of the Peak District. March 2018 reports added for East Anglia, Herts and North London, Lincs and Northants, Midlands, NE England, NW England, SE England, Yorkshire and WessexJon McGregor has been quietly building a reputation as one of the outstanding writers of his generation since 2002, when he became the youngest writer to be longlisted for the Booker prize with his debut, If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, published when he was 26. Reservoir 13 is only his fourth novel, but it confirms his gift as a poet of ordinary lives and his skill in taking risks with form and style.

People report sightings. August water situation reports replaced with September reports. East Anglia and Solent and South Downs reports will follow. Another short hike on the list, but with two fantastic Peak District locations – Winnats Pass and Mam Tor. Both of these can be seen from the road and you’ve probably driven past on your route into Castleton village. As this begins, in this unnamed village in the Peak District of England, a family is on holiday with their thirteen year-old daughter, Rebecca, when she goes missing on New Year’s Eve. The Peak District Dark Peak area is known for its peaty moors and this basically means it can be boggy in areas. If you’re doing a longer hike then it’s good to keep your feet dry, Gore-tex hiking shoes and boots are great, but for some walks, gaiters are really useful too, especially on a rainy day hike. Because we think we’re going to find Rebecca’s body at any moment. McGregor doesn’t waste the power of the old pattern, with its hidden horror at the heart. He teases us, drawing us on, and we read hungrily to find out what happened. Time passes and the police searches come to nothing, the divers go into the reservoirs in vain, Rebecca isn’t found: not that first night, nor in the days and weeks that follow. Yet everything is charged by our expectation as readers: everything ordinary has its undertow of significance. When the keeper wades into the river and cuts away the weeds, or when children on a picnic ask about the boarded-up old lead mines, or when the boiler house at the school is demolished, after Jones the caretaker has been so secretive, not letting anyone inside: we expect the worst. Is Rebecca in there? Are we going to find her body now? Learn what really happened to her, or what she really is? Everyone is still dreaming about “being the first to reach her with a blanket and bring her safely home”.What was missing for me - were memorable characters . Even in a village, where people come and go - are distracted with their own lives - have little real connection with their community. Wouldn’t there people a few ‘standout’ people? I’ve never read such an extraordinary novel with such insight into the cycles of life of peoples lives and nature’s beauty. Everyone and everything is observed with such exceptional detailed prose. McGregor writes about the landscape, birds, plants, and wildlife through life and death. His unusual structure keeps running on so wonderfully. Time goes on. Life moves on one year to the next. Each year the missing girl is still not found. Each chapter brings us to a different reservoir and gets us closer to Reservoir 13 with a feeling of unease as the book progresses.
